France rolls out Shs2.1bn project to enhance food security in Karamoja
A project worth 535 000 euros (Shs 2.1 billion) has been presented by the French government with the goal of improving the nutritional health and food security of households in the Karamoja sub-region who are at risk.
The project, which was introduced on Thursday at the residence of the French Ambassador in Nakasero, will be carried out by ACTED and the Caritas Moroto diocese. Its primary focus will be women residing in the districts of Nakapiripirit and Amudat.
Through agricultural methods, ACTED and the Caritas Moroto diocese will improve food security for 1,500 vulnerable households in the Karamoja subregion during the project’s implementation.
Therefore, via targeted Maternal Child Health and Nutrition (MCHN) interventions, this one-year initiative, which will begin in August, will also aim to lower the prevalence of stunting among children under two years old in chosen areas during the next year.
The French ambassador to Uganda, Xavier Sticker, emphasized the successful and long-standing cooperation between the Embassy and ACTED during the signing event.
“Indeed, this new project is a continuation of actions carried out by ACTED in the recent past and in the same area of intervention,” he stated.
Amelia Savell-Boss, the Country Director of ACTED in Uganda, expressed her excitement over the project’s debut in the nation
She reaffirmed their commitment to assisting households in the community and enhancing food security and child nutrition in Karamoja.
“Karamoja and the areas that we are going to be supporting under the scope of this project are some of highest areas of need in Uganda. They have some of the highest levels of food insecurity and that’s why we have partnership with the French Embassy to support these households,” Savell-Boss said.
She further emphasized that inclusion was at the center of the project.
“In this regard, the Aid Food Programme 2024 will benefit to 1,500 households, among 66% of women, with preference given to households with pregnant and/or lactating mother and/or children under 24 months,
