Poverty rate likely to rise in Uganda
The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) declared that the country’s population is only a few hundred people short of 46 million.
UBOS covered 11 million homes in 2024, up from 7.2 million in 2014, according to census commissioner Dr. Chris Mukiza, who was speaking during the release of the preliminary findings of the 2024 census.
“Uganda’s population is now 45.9 million up from 34.6 million in 2014 . This means there is an increase by 11.3 million in the last 10 years. That number has refugees to a tune of 780061 while the average household size is 4.4 from 4.7 in 2014,” Dr.Mukiza said.
In a developing nation like Uganda, a growing population can have a significant impact on the economy in a number of way
The current infrastructure, which includes utilities, schools, hospitals, and roads, may be strained by a sharp rise in population. This may result in a drop in the general standard of living for locals and insufficient services.
Also, in a developing nation, poverty and income disparity may worsen due to population growth. Basic services and opportunities for all individuals may be difficult to provide due to the strain on already scarce resources.
Competition for opportunities and resources as a result of population growth can cause social tensions, disputes, and instability in local communities.
A country is also more likely to face health issues, environmental deterioration, and other issues as its population grows.
