Entebbe to Close Open-Air Market

Effective July 1st, the Entebbe Municipal Council will close all weekly open-air markets, also referred to as “kabubbu.”

Mayor Fabrice Rulinda made the broad decision public, highlighting the importance of assisting the major markets that pay the municipal council dues each month.

Mayor Rulinda said that the council decided to close all weekly open-air markets except the one in Kitooro .

“We realised that these open-air markets and mobile delivery vans are negatively impacting the business performance in our main markets, which are crucial for the local economy,” he emphasized.

Not only will the flea markets be shut down, but food-selling trucks or mobile delivery vans will not be permitted.

Rulinda warned that mobile vendors will have their vehicles impounded and owners charged accordingly

The Mayor emphasized the decision’s economic justification, stressing the significance of preserving strong market activity.

“Our main markets are essential to the municipality’s revenue. We need to protect them from unfair competition that undermines their viability,” he explained.

The Kitooro market is the only exception to the closure; it will stay open. The objective of this decision is to maintain the stability of the primary market infrastructure while balancing the requirement for easily accessible market options.
