Traffic affected after Kampala – Masaka Road Section Caves in again.
Due to heavy rains on Sunday, a section of the road between Kyengera and Budo junction caved in, causing traffic on the Kampala-Masaka highway to be rerouted.
The road is sinking in for the second time in four months as it last occured in december last year. The development, according to police, has resulted in a “severe traffic jam along the Busega-Kyengera section”.
“You are thus advised to use the alternative routes like Nakawuka road-Budo junction or Kitemu and Mityana road- Buloba-Nsangi to access Kampala- Masaka Highway” according to Police.
Drivers traveling from Masaka to Kampala are advised to access Kampala via Kitemu, Budo-Nakawuka, or Nsangi-Buloba-Mutyaba road while the Uganda National Roads Authority keeps an eye on the situation.
For motorists using the impacted route, they were advised by UNRA to proceed cautiously when approaching the damaged area.
According to UNRA, erosion has been found to be the primary factor causing considerable damage to about 1.5 meters of the road surface close to the embankment.
The rising water levels in the Lubigi swamp region were said to be the cause.
