UBOS expresses preparedness for census
The National Population and Housing Census is just ten days away, and the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has begun distributing tablet computers, which will be used to capture data for the exercise.
Over the weekend, UBOS dispatched the first consignment of 3410 devices to the districts of Gulu, Apac, Amolator, Alebtong, and Otuke.
While flagging off the first batch in Kampala, Mr Chris Mukiza, Ubos executive director, said the devices are ready for use, “We have already completed distribution in 71 districts and as you can see, we have many staff who are working to ensure that by the time of enumeration in every district, every region is ready,” Mr Mukisa said.
Once the software is installed, inserting of the SIM cards with Access Point Name (APN), among other prerequisites, Mr Mukiza said, other districts will receive the tablets.
“The tablets are being checked, SIM cards with APN being inserted. At the stage of provisioning where the census application has the questionnaire, the enumerator’s manual, census map for each enumeration area is undertaken,”Mr Mukiza said
He explained that each gadget has a census map for the given enumeration area.
The state minister for planning, Mr. Amos Lugolobi, stated that UBOS has already obtained all the 12000 tablets needed for the census.
The Minister clarified that the tablets are waterproof and equipped with more standardized components that allow them to stay safe even in the event of falling down.
