Russia’s pork supplies to China exceed 10,000 tons
According to a Russian agricultural watchdog, Russia sent more than 10,000 tons of pork goods, comprising roughly 6,800 tons of pork and 3,200 tons of pork byproducts, to China.
“As of June 24, 2024, more than 10,000 tons of pork products were exported to China. In particular, about 6,800 tons of pork and about 3,200 of pork by-products,” the statement says.
Prior to this, Sergey Dankvert, the head of Russia’s agricultural watchdog, stated on the fringes of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum that exports of Russian pig products to China may exceed 100,000 tons by the end of 2024.
The General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China abolished restrictions on Russian pork supplies relating to African swine disease in September 2023, according to a report by the Russian agricultural watchdog. Based on the findings of a risk assessment and an examination of Russia’s state control mechanism for African swine fever, the decision was taken.
Representatives from the People’s Republic of China’s General Administration of Customs visited Russia in December 2023 in order to familiarize themselves with the veterinary supervision system and the operations of the agricultural watchdog’s research institutes. They examined Russian pork manufacturers and went to see pig farms.
Three Russian enterprises were granted certification by the Chinese competent body to export pork to China. The first export of pork, totaling 27 tons, was reported by the Miratorg agro-industrial holding on March 7. The pork was shipped from the Belgorod region to China. A different Russian company shipped 167.99 tons of pig byproducts to China in three cargoes on April 2.
